I always used to like black on white, but I think nowadays I prefer what you call soft readability. I'm not a lover of light on dark, but the other colors you suggested above sound ideal to me.
Having said all that, I' now finding this color scheme is okay! Contrary? Awkward? Yep, that's me.
Love the idea of options for downloading. I do most of my reading from a kindle, and copying and pasting (especially long fics) is a bitch! I wish everyone could make things a bit easier by giving options.
