Left the "point" out of the previous post. ;) Typical.

When did rock and roll and all its trappings become part of the establishment?

Rock music on TV, and permeating the "establishment". Clinton had Fleetwood Mac as a theme song for the presidental election. Obama had every damn body, and the Kennedy Honors yearly broadcast had a tribute to Led Zeppelin.

Zombies, superheroes, pot. They're now "accepted" even if pot is still illegal. I watch COPS and get annoyed every time they make a pot bust--but they've had newish episodes where a guy with a tub garden of "medical" pot plants in his backyard was the *victim* of theft and not the perp.

It's been a long mainstay of the rock generation that our musical culture was the epitome of rebellion. It wasn't like the 40s Swing/Jazz generation driving their parents crazy. Jazz and blues were rebellion, but they were a stepping stone. The "in your face" rebellion was rock, hard rock, heavy metal.

Disco was like a big "fuck you" to the rock rebellion culture. (I purposely didn't use "eff you") It was there, however, driving parents and the establishment crazy.

I'm not trying to write up a history of musical rebellion. I'm just talking about how the 60-year rebellion of the rock and roll rebellion, with all that includes, has pretty much become part of the establishment, and it's WEIRD. It's just WEIRD.

When disco came about, rock rebelled even louder. When it sort-of died, rock felt smug. Then along came rap. Rock rebelled, fell on its back and screamed. It felt as if rock was fading, being supplanted by "pop", and that just couldn't happen, goddammit! Then Run DMC covered Aerosmith's "Walk This Way", pretty much digging Aerosmith out of its addiction grave, especially with the music video, and suddenly rock and rap became friends instead of cold warriors.

And *still*. It's WEIRD. Rock has become ordinary and expected. Rap is more often heard on TV fiction shows than "regular" rock music, with a few exceptions. How in the hell did that happen?

Rock in commercials. Zombies as TV show plots. Old bands are making "resurrection" tours.

You say "Beatles" or "John Lennon" to some young people, and they say, "Who?"

::blinks::

Rock has gotten old, like me. And it's frickin' WEIRD because I don't feel that way.
